How to Choose a Licensed Plumber in Connecticut (Without Getting Burned)
You searched “plumber near me” because something’s wrong — a dripping faucet that won’t stop, a water heater making noises it shouldn’t, or something worse that you just discovered on a Sunday morning. The last thing you need right now is to pick the wrong person and end up with a bigger problem than you started with.
Paul Almeida here, owner of Charter Oak Plumbing. I’ve been a licensed plumber in Connecticut for over 20 years. I’ve seen what happens when homeowners hire on price alone, and I’ve cleaned up the aftermath of unlicensed “handymen” who made things significantly worse. Here’s what I’d tell a family member about hiring a plumber in CT.
First: Confirm the License
Connecticut requires plumbers to hold a state license issued by the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). There are two types: Journeyman Plumber (P-2) and Master Plumber (P-1). The Master license is what a plumbing company owner or lead plumber should hold — it means they’ve passed a rigorous exam and met the experience requirements to pull permits and supervise work.
You can verify any plumber’s license at the Connecticut eLicense portal. Takes 30 seconds. If someone is doing plumbing work in your home without a valid CT license, you may have issues with homeowner’s insurance claims if something goes wrong — and the liability lands on you.
Charter Oak Plumbing is fully licensed in Connecticut. Always has been. We’ll show you our credentials anytime you ask.
Get a Written Estimate Before Anything Starts
A reputable plumber gives you a written estimate before doing any work — not a range, not a “we’ll see how it goes,” but an actual dollar figure for the job. Emergency situations are different (sometimes you need something fixed right now at midnight), but even then, you should get a clear quote for what you’re paying.
Avoid anyone who starts working without getting your written authorization. This is how “small jobs” become $800 surprises.
Understand the Difference: Emergency vs. Scheduled Work
Emergency plumbing — active leak, burst pipe, backed-up sewer, no hot water in January — legitimately costs more because the plumber is dropping everything and coming immediately. That’s fair. What’s not fair is a plumber who calls everything an emergency to justify inflated rates.
If it’s not a true emergency, take a few hours to get two or three quotes on the same job. For water heater replacements, tankless system installs, or bathroom remodels, the range of quotes you’ll get is significant — and the cheapest isn’t always wrong, but it’s always worth asking why.
Ask About Permits
In Connecticut, significant plumbing work requires a permit — water heater replacements, sewer line work, bathroom additions, gas line modifications. A licensed plumber handles this for you. An unlicensed one either skips the permit (leaving you with work that can’t be inspected or may cause issues at resale) or flat-out can’t pull one.
If a plumber quotes you significantly less than everyone else and says “no permit needed” for a job that clearly requires one — walk away.
Check Reviews — But Read Them Right
Google reviews, BBB ratings, and Angi profiles are all useful signals. But read the 3-star and 4-star reviews most carefully — they tend to be the most honest. Five-star reviews can be encouraged; 1-star reviews are sometimes from people who had unrealistic expectations. The middle reviews tell you the real story about communication, pricing transparency, and follow-through.
Charter Oak Plumbing has maintained a BBB A-rating for years. We’re proud of that, but more important to us is that homeowners in Berlin, Farmington, Southington, Bristol, New Britain, and the surrounding area trust us to come back the next time something goes wrong — because we got it right the first time.
Questions to Ask Before You Hire
When you call a plumber, these questions take two minutes and will tell you a lot:
- “Are you licensed in Connecticut?” (and offer to give them time to provide their license number)
- “Will you pull the permit for this job?”
- “Do you provide written estimates?”
- “What’s your warranty on labor?”
- “Do you use subcontractors, or is this your own team?”
The answers you get will separate the professionals from everyone else in about 60 seconds.
